Main Article Content
Abstract
The Chung Hwa School heritage area in Donggala is a significant site that reflects the history and development of the Chinese community in Central Sulawesi, particularly in Donggala City. Established in 1924, the school served as an important educational center for the Chinese community until its closure in 1966 due to political dynamics. In addition to functioning as an educational institution, Chung Hwa School is also a symbol of identity and cultural heritage for the local Chinese community. This study aims to provide an overview of the current condition of Chung Hwa School and formulate preservation efforts to ensure its role as a historical resource that contributes to strengthening local identity. The research adopts a descriptive method with a qualitative approach. Data collection techniques include observation, in-depth interviews, written sources, and documentation. The findings of this study reveal that the buildings within the Chung Hwa School heritage area remain largely authentic, with minimal changes (not exceeding 10% of the original structure). However, preservation efforts for this area as a heritage site remain very limited. This study emphasizes the need for concrete steps in preserving the Chung Hwa School heritage area to uphold its cultural significance, safeguarding its aesthetic, historical, scientific, and social values for the past, present, and future generations.
